Narrative Design

Title:

The original name of the project 生光 represented the fourth stage of a solar eclipse, which refers to the end of the eclipse stage when a partial light appears again on the Sun.

The concept of the first protagonist "Black Sun" in the story is set as the sun during a solar eclipse. One refers to the complete end of the era of a Showa Kamen Rider, and the second refers to the new arrival of the "coming sun" represented by the second protagonist Yu, which symbolizes the new stage of the relationship between Kaijin (monster-liked creature) and humans.

Theme:

Core theme: Choice. In the near future background based on reality, through the struggles and choices of the characters about their own obsessions, it tells the "tragedy of the cyborg" of a Showa-style Kamen Rider.

Plot summary:

Black Sun, who is in his forties, accidentally encounters Yu, a boy who has been transformed into a Kaijin but still retains his consciousness. For their own reasons, the two embarked on a journey together to complete the unfinished wishes.

Gameplay Design

The story unfolds over four chapters, with a narrative equivalent to a 100-minute film. Players gradually uncover the tale of the two Kamen Riders through this interactive gameplay..

The showcased chapter (Chapter II) in demo center around Yu, employing side-scrolling puzzles and stealth elements to bring his story to life. After multiple iterations of level map design and fine-tuning the lighting and shadow mechanics in Unity, I aimed to create a gameplay experience where Yu moves in the shadows and controls the light. Players need to change the position of lights in the scene to further change the passable area covered by shadows, and make better use of the cover in the scene by switching perspectives to avoid the sight of enemy units.

The third level is in a three-floor cylindrical building, where the impact of light sources on the shadow path will cross floors, so players need to consider the construction of the route more.

As the game progresses, the protagonist Yu's ability is upgraded accordingly to cope with subsequent levels. The number of light sources that can be changed will increase, and the ability to perspective-switching will also evolve to allow the character to teleport in horizontally parallel shadow areas.

In addition to the tutorial level shown in the demo, there are two more complete levels in Chapter II, each of which is designed around different camera perspectives.

The second level is a large-scale plane area, where players need to switch back and forth between the top-down perspective and the regular side perspective to complete the infiltration.

Scene Breakdown

I. Alone in the Wild

Then there is no prosperity or splendor to borrow.

Black Sun woke up from his dream and didn't realize it was already late. He only heard some noise outside the house. When he went out to check, Yu, who had turned into a rhinoceros beetle Kaijin, was being chased by other clone jellyfish Kaijins. Black Sun unexpectedly discovered that the boy could maintain his consciousness in a completely Kaijin form, so he rescued the boy. Although Yu had no idea about the cause of his physical change, Black Sun was still keenly aware of the change in the city. Just as he was hesitating, the real body of the jellyfish monster came in front of the two, and its tentacles reached out to attack Black Sun.

II. Tango with Me

If you like weirdos, I'm actually beautiful.

In the darkness, Yu witnessed the return of Black Sun, the legendary Kamen Rider, signaling the end of Karma’s self redemption. After the battle, Yu believed he had encountered "the chosen one" from city rumors. Strange events in Dongxing city pointed to Dongxing University, so Black Sun and Yu drove back to uncover the truth. Earlier, Yu had fled the university in a hurry, unable to address the chaos. The city was on high alert due to the university’s graduation ceremony. The two managed to sneak in, with Black Sun heading to meet his old friend Ushio in the lab, determined to uncover Karma's secrets. Yu, noticing the presence of dangerous Kaijins, feared a catastrophe and decided to protect the unaware students at the ceremony. In a moment of inner conflict over his identity, Yu acted swiftly. He shut off the building’s lights, secretly neutralized the Kaijins, and in the darkness, took his beloved girl’s hand, dancing with her for the final time.

III. The Great Entertainer

At the end of the song, the boy had to leave before the lights came on. At this time, not only Dongxing University, but also the entire Dongxing City was on the verge of a tense atmosphere. A large number of people who had become Kaijins poured into the streets. The racial conflicts accumulated over a long period of time were on the verge of breaking out. At this moment, Yu, who had completely become a Kaijin, directly triggered it off. In chaos, Yu defeated several small leaders in the monster group with difficulty, and as a representative of the Kaijin group, he successfully reached a consensus with the human group, and the two sides temporarily ceased fire.

On the other side, Black Sun and his old friend Ushio reunited in the underground facilities of Dongxing City. Ushio, who once had helped Black Sun 20 years ago, chose to stand opposite the rider this time. Although Black Sun suffered from unexpected attack, he turned danger into safety with his own combating skills, and killed several powerful Kaijins in succession underground. While fighting his way out of a bloody road, he gradually realized the truth behind it by combining the clues he saw along the way and his own memories.

The long and dark passage was destined to take him to the center of the stage. At the end, Black Sun met White Night – another "himself" with exactly the same abilities and completely opposite names. This story, which should not have been started, was born because of his own choice back then, and was continued and developed because of White Night’s manipulation, and eventually led to the riots in the city today, and this battle that was doomed to be fruitless.

The rider knew that he was no longer able to change anything standing here at this moment. No matter what the outcome of the battle was, the Kaijins would eventually welcome for the "black sun" in the prophecy that would lead them to conquer mankind.

But the rider still clenched his fists, and the rider could only clench his fists.

All alone, just like old time.

IV. Play Ruined but Actors Survived

Let the darkest theater shine.

The riot of the crowd in the city gradually subsided due to Yu's actions. Suddenly, an earthquake struck, and to everyone's surprise, a platform slowly rose in the Dongxing University campus in the center of Dongxing City. Standing in the center of the platform was the black rider who had not been seen for a long time.

Amid the continuous shouts from the crowd of Kaijins, the boy met the rider's eyes.

Stepping onto the passage leading to the platform, Yu vaguely saw the journey of Black Sun and Shadow Moon in the past. Looking back at the crowd, Yu found that the previously terrifying mutant organs on his body had turned into biological armor similar to that of the rider without knowing when.

So the boy stopped trembling, and he walked towards the rider firmly.
